Here’s how to take accuracy and efficiency even further:
1 Account for all your project variables
Even if your wall dimensions and brick size are nailed down, don’t forget to factor in variations like mortar thickness, bond pattern, or special-shaped bricks. Each of these can slightly shift your total requirement. When using Brickhunter’s free calculator, it’s worth testing a range of mortar widths or adding in unique bricks to ensure your estimate truly reflects the real project.
2 Add a smart buffer - not a guess
The age-old advice is to tack on 10% as a buffer - but you can be smarter than that. Consider your project’s complexity and potential for breakage or trimming. For a simple, straight wall, 5–7% might be sufficient. But for ornate arches or ornate detailing, where cuts and breakages are more likely, you might want to go up to 12–15%.
3 Reuse what you can
Not every brick needs to be bought new. Salvaged, reclaimed or re-used bricks can slot seamlessly into your total - especially when used in low-visibility or background sections. Even if these aren't counted in your calculator, subtracting reused stock from your final order helps you avoid over-purchasing and waste.
